Herman the
German was born in Hannover, Germany in 1914. The seventeenth son
of a left-handed bookkeeper, he chose not to follow in the family
profession. He grew up a happy child always interested in how
things were made. He would hang outside the local brewery asking
the workers question after question until they finally told him to go
away.
At the age of 24 with World War II looming on the
horizon, Herman left for America claiming "I'm a brewer not a
fighter." After spending several years in Milwaukee working for a
large brewery, he moved to Pittsburgh because he knew it was the home
of real beer.
By this time he had already grown his trademark
white mustache and continued to wear traditional German
attire. He started his brewery with a dream of making the
world's best lager and selling it at the world's best prices.
After a period of trial and error, he achieved his goal with the
introduction of Old German Premium Lager.
Old German Premium Lager became a popular brand with
sensible consumers throughout the Pittsburgh area. It is well
known for its great taste and great price. It has become the beer
of choice for college kids and broke ass guys far and wide.
Herman now enjoys the retired life in Pittsburgh
still attending sporting events and social functions in his traditional
German attire. He enjoys staying home with his many grandchildren
and telling them stories about great cheap beer.
